TOP TIPS FOR IMPROVING YOUR RUNNING DOWNHILL

Trail running may well have a good reputation for placing less stress on the joints than road running because of the running surface itself, but when it comes to running downhill, this perk can count for nothing. Hundreds of runners every year pick up a range of injuries from running downhill and although they are usually nothing more serious than a twisted ankle, it can make the trek home an incredibly long one. Lack of control, unfamiliarity with the surface, excessive speed and hidden rocks and roots are all possible reasons why you could find yourself in trouble on a downslope, so try these tips for improving the safety of your downhill running.

DOWNHILL ETIQUETTE

Depending on your level of ability and courage, there is every chance that in a race situation, you’ll be hurtling down hill way faster than someone else. If you are tearing down a slope and you notice you are gaining fast on a fellow runner, it’s important you let them know of your presence to avoid a potentially nasty collision. As you get close to the slower runner and are within earshot, observe the trail ahead and choose which route you’ll take as you pass. Then call out to the runner 'Passing on your left!' or 'Passing on your right!' to alert them to your presence.
